"What You Do... Defines You."
This is a very powerful statement for me. It is our creed, and
it represents my entire outlook in martial arts and in life.
American Martial Arts Aacademy originated in New Orleans. Due to the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, it was forced to close. After 4 years of Hurricanes and Tropical Storms, Katrina managed to destroy my home and academy under 8' of water. During the evacuation, and the months to follow, I traveled to various states in search of a place to start again. This is when I decided to return to Wisconsin... to re-open American Martial Arts Academy were I was born and raised.
American Martial Arts Academy is designed to be an academy unlike any other. It is a true martial arts academy, which provides a unique curriculum and environment, offering personal and individual attention to all of its students. I focus on the "Quality", not the "Quantity" of students. Classes are separated by age and skill, class size is exclusive, and personal attention is a guaranteed element in every class.
American Martial Arts Academy maintains a "Focused-but-Fun" atmosphere in all classes, providing an environment where children, youth, teens, and adults are trained in a manner appropriate for their skill and age.
American Martial Arts Academy is commited to it's student's success... not by how many students are enrolled, but by the quality of character and skill of the students within my academy, and by the positive impact martial arts can have on their lives.
The Warrior's Way
The "Warrior's Way" is how I define my style. It is the seamless intigration of everything I have trained in and developed in martial arts. It is character, leadership, loyalty, patriotism, creativity, expression, desire, achievement, and ability. A Warrior doesn't seek conflict or battle, but if needed... has the ability to rise up and defend oneself, his family, and his country. A true Warrior acts with honor and leads others by example. He holds true to his convictions and trains always to improve his physical, mental, and emotional ability in all aspects, both in life and in martial arts.
"What We Do... Defines Us"... is the "Warrior's Way"
I have developed a system of martial arts based on "Concept Application", not on the "Memorization of Forms". Our curriculum is one of a kind. It is a direct result of years of revisions and improvements, and a desire to offer the best training available. It guarantees personal attention, growth, challenge, and success.
Skills are based on Practicality, Effectiveness, and Realism. not "Traditional Forms & Theories". Students train in every aspect of martial arts from Kicking, Striking, Grappling, and Weapons. Rank testing is incredibly demanding, but those who focus and train, will someday "Earn" their Black Belt, and have true confidence, true skills, and a true ability to defend themselves. In addition to this, they will be leaders and positive role models.
Students gain a level of knowledge and ability they never knew existed. They will become aware of skills and courage they never knew they had, and they will be able to rise above the negativity of those around them, and overcome self-doubt and fear.
As modern day warriors… our students realize the privilege they have been given, and train to achieve success in the most demanding situations, overcome fear, and lead with honor.
My Opinion: For What It's Worth...
Too many instructors hide behind their plastic trophies and Belt Rank. They lead people to believe having a "High Ranking Black Belt", qualifies them to be outstanding leaders and instructors. In many places, students are lucky to even get 2 minutes of personal attention. They get so caught up in tradition, that 1/2 of what they spend time doing, doesn't in anyway benefit a student physically or emotionally... not unless counting in another language will keep them safe against an assailant.
With the overwhelming commercialization of martial arts schools today, many simply "sell" Black Belts to whomever pays. With watered-down curriculums and standards, they never really challenge a student, nor do they offer real success.
They sell expensive "Black Belt Club" memberships and insist the only way to demonstrate "Black Belt Dedication", is to pay ridiculus additional fees to join the club. Most martial arts schools have simply become glorified "country clubs", or "McDojos". It's a sad fact in most places, once your check clears... you've past your rank test.
This is a disgrace. It's an insult to the families and students who entrust these instructors for guidance and instruction, and simply end up with empty pockets and promises. It's an insult to those who are still committed to quality and who haven't given in to the commercialized aspects of martial arts. A quality martial artist has become a rare thing, and even more rare, is a quality school. My goal is to change that, one student at a time.
